As lava flowed down our mountains over millions of years, each flow varied slightly. Some were crunchy, cindery a'a, and some smooth flowing pahoehoe. Flows came in all sizes and thickness.
As a result Kona is made up of many micro ecosystems.
Kowali farm is fortunate to be located on one of the oldest flows in the area, created way before recorded history. Located on the slopes above Kealakekua Bay, where the Hawaiians of old raised Taro, sweet potatoes and bananas, we are blessed with the morning sunshine and afternoon cloud shade and misty rain, perfect for the ripening coffee cherry. We try to be "earth friendly". We have graded the land to prevent erosion and planted grass between rows where the slope permits. We use no pesticides. In 1998 we were selected farm of the year by the Kona soil and Water Conservation district for protecting our Natural resources. Our coffee once again was one of twelve kona coffee entries to receive Honorable Mention at the  cupping contest during the in 2006 Kona Coffee Cultural Festival,  and we were the
Winners of the 2008 Gevalia Kona Crown Cupping Competition!
